When Nellie was in the pre-pre-prelim stages of planning her wedding, she kept buying black dresses and had declared she was going to wear a black dress as her wedding dress. How edgy.

Instead of a black wedding dress, Kiss the Groom and The Sweetest Occasion featured this black bridesmaid dress, and it took my breath away. I immediately flashed back to CB's wedding in Sex in the City.

For parties, Nautical seems to be a common theme. Most of the décor can be found for cheap, and/or DIY. Think beach house, shabby chic.

Jennifer, from The Tillman Family, hosted a nautical themed birthday party for her son’s 1^st birthday party. How sweet are the newspaper hats, and double tiered red cake stands. You can’t go wrong with robins egg blue and red.

On Over Cocktails, Colleen hosted a baby shower for a baby boy on the way. The navy accents bring rich color into the room, which are perfect compliments for the beige of the sand and jute.

If it seems like I have wedding on the brain, it’s because I do. Two of my best friends are getting married, and I couldn’t be more excited. Helping plan this wedding makes me happy. I feel like a kid on Christmas, who can’t quit moving because you’re so anxious. Yeah, that’s me. I'm giddy.

Amy + Ryan are planning to wed in March 2011 and are just now in the throws of trying to nail down a venue.

We go back to the days of awkward high schoolers, where we bonded over our love of camping, bon fires, and sleeping on trampolines. Oh and Mike’s Hard Lemonade, it was early Y2K after all.

Gum Wall

I love when I see great pictures featured on wedding websites that are local. These photos weren't tagged as a Seattle engagement shoot, but I immediately recognized the gum wall from Post Alley.

The gum wall is gnarly -- and unsanitary. However, the styling for this engagement shoot is a perfect pairing to wall. The soft pink of the balloons, and their sweet dog are a stark dichotomy to the gritty locale.

What’s that you say, your fingers are cramping after addressing 150 invitations and your fingers are a nice shade of ink? Invest in a stamp for your return address labels from Lettergirl. Beautiful finish, and easy to use. Even though it’s a stamp, it’s a cheap substitute for labels and/or handwriting. Plus, they’re cute.

Be gone cell phone pics, or at your desk photos. Here’s a few pointers to taking memorable, meaningful and beautiful pictures of your ring.

While budgeting for an event, a ‘photobooth’ might seem to be farther down on the list than food, and flowers – however, your opinion might change after seeing these. The image is found re-branded their version of a photobooth as a CRAZYBOOTH! and via their website you can download a .pdf (for a fee) of how they put together their photobooth for the host/bride with real gumption.

In the PNW, Michelle M. Waite is the go-to wedding photographer if you want gorgeous pictures. Not to mention that she often partners with Steven Moore designs for a tag-team you won’t regret.

NYE : Wine Labels

Armed with my high school photoshop skills, and trader joes 2 buck (now $5) chuck, here’s a simple New Years Eve wine label project.

Beginning step is prepping your bottles. I’ve had success with soaking bottles in water (a splash of detergent works wonders), then removing the tacky residue with either rubbing alcohol, or goo-b-gone. And, well elbow grease. If you happen to have a spare paint scraper, it may be handy, but it’s not necessary, a butter knife will suffice.

FOR THE LABELS:

Click on images below with multiple labels per sheet, for full (letter) sized images.
Save as image, and open in a word document.
Using any ‘ole desktop printer, print onto sticker paper.
Cut using an xacto, paper cutter, or scissors if you have a steady hand. Um, I don’t.
Stick ‘em on your bottles. I used a credit card to smooth the labels, and started with the upper left corner – but that’s just me.

These make a great gift for a hostess, or simply for yourself. Cheers!

For event parties like New Years Eve, we understand that flowers are not supposed to be the biggest portion of your budget. Depending on what type of party you’re having it will be either food or booze. Keeping that in mind, here’s a few budget conscious options from FiftyFlowers. As always, try your local farmers market or local growers. That is where you’re going to find the most reasonable prices, and best selection in bulk. Dahlias (when in season) are beautiful texturally as well as incredibly reasonable in price.

A few weeks ago, over on 100 layer cake, they posted this picture.

While the tablescape is stunning, what caught most readers eye was the napkins. [what...napkins you say?]

These are inexpensive restaurant tea towels that can be purchased in bulk. A quick way to add a bit of sophistication to your event. Even though paper towels come by the cube at Costco, trust me, these would be classier.

Pretty Carnations

And who said carnations are ugly?

As I was searching for wedding (or holiday) decorations that are inexpensive, yet look incredible I came across a centerpiece via Eddie Ross. I’ll be the first to admit it. I don’t even consider carnations as pretty flowers. I don’t look twice at them in the supermarket, and especially the dyed ones. They’re right up there with baby’s breath. Until now.

-Carnations are inexpensive to purchase – check your supermarket or farmers market, or if you prefer to order from the comfort of your pj’s at home FiftyFlowers has 4 bunches x 100 stems for $100.00

-Candle sticks could be found (or painted) at a thrift store, but again if you’re looking for an online retailer check these out.

Walmart $14 set of 4 - These could be painted carefully or left as glass.

Amazon $131 - By far, the most expensive, but also the ones you may find the most use from.

Ebay $29.99

-Floral spheres are cheap - $10.99 online, but may be more inexpensive at a local craft or floral supply store.

Holiday Jewelry

Throughout the holiday season, there is usually at least one event on the calendar where you have to dress up. The rest of the winter season, it’s layers of sweaters and boots, but for save for a few events where you need to get gussied up. Yes, gussied.

I tend to shy away from dressing up, grabbing from the back of the closet for something black and something I already own. An easy fix to this, is adding a bit of sparkle to a blah outfit with statement jewelry. Sometimes I go for sequins (I’m a sucker for things that glitter), but 90% of the time, I go with black and jewels.

J.Crew has some great pieces that are reminiscent of art deco vintage pieces. Mix and match with things you already have, or search flea markets, vintage jewelry stores, wal-mart, or target for additional pieces.

This year for halloween, try letting go of the automatic color scheme of black and orange. Instead try combining black, silver, crystal and white. It’s an easy way to create a more chic tablescape as well as using many items I’m sure you already have.

The wreath is sold as red berries – my suggestion, grab your trusty can of spray paint, and Paint it Black.

Working Office

I typically work with my laptop on my lap, while sitting on the couch – most likely multi-tasking and watching TV. That’s just me. Nellie on the other hand, often uses the kitchen table and is often accompanied by dear Dallas. [the pony sized dog]

We are however, in the process of putting together our office [which is really just an extra bedroom that I will start referring to as HQ, the lair, or some other nickname to make it seem legit].

Furniture can be an investment and is not always in the budget. My wish list is always longer than my actual shopping list.

I figure a great place to start in putting together our office is a desk. As I browse the internet, my standard reaction is “oh, that’s pretty.” Over and over again. Sometimes it’s even out loud. The style I keep coming back to is that of the Parson’s desk. It has clean lines, symmetry, and is chic. Not to mention it nearly matches the rest of my Ikea furniture. Just an added bonus. (search for lack or expdit and you’ll see what I mean)

The question is: splurge or save?

Last night we attended Urban Unveiled, a premier wedding vendor showcase, hosted at Benaroya Hall. While definitely still a tradeshow, the ambiance was of a cocktail party for those getting married to celebrate as well as begin conversations with local and respected vendors. The theme of the event was “South Beach Chic” and the color theme and decorations were incredibly complimentary. It was a sea of coral colors, white chaise lounges, beach glass, sea foam greens, and palm trees.

One interesting point—there were not a lot of brides or customers at this event. In many ways it seemed like a networking opportunity for those in the industry. This may have been due to a ticket price that was a bit higher than typical, or that the vendors were hand-picked thus less than a normal show (which is not a bad thing).

Well, we did have one bride in our party: Ms. Claire Karlberg who will be getting married in summer 2011. Hold the presses…this was just our cover story. Upon arrival, we quickly realized we would need a reason to be at this event, besides being new to the business, and the easiest cover story was one of us being a bride.

If you browse the pages of either Seattle Bride Magazine, or Seattle Metropolitan Bride and Groom, many of the vendors from Urban Unveiled are featured throughout the publications. Unlike Seattle Wedding Show, because the number of vendors at Urban Unveiled was kept to a relatively small number, they all know each other, and work closely on many events. It’s a good thing – trust me.

Halloween is a chance to indulge in sweets, and embrace nostalgia by dressing up.

Costumes (tacky, scandalous, or nostalgic) and events vary. For some it’s a chance to unveil their closet affliction for leg warmers, dust off that gorilla costume dad wore in the 70’s, embrace a secret love of cartoons, or a creative outlet fueled by trips to the Goodwill. Typically my Halloween costumes were always found in the bottom of the ‘dress up box’ and involved some kind of old formal dress and gaudy jewelry. There was no limit on how many times you could dress up as a princess – or at what age. I was however told at 15 that I was too old to trick-or-treat.

Truth be told, I enjoy the holiday because I like skulls and the color black.

*And candy corn is delicious, even though just one piece could likely rot your teeth.

Party décor and invitations can vary based on the intended age group of the attendants. If you’re having an adults only cocktail party – you may go with more sophisticated limited décor and weigh heavily on the drinks rather than the candy, however if it’s a family oriented all-ages soirée the décor and food ideas are geared more towards the masses (think cupcakes and caramel apples).

When planning a party, I get super excited about invitations and paper products. Geeky, I know.

It’s not just the name of their monthly advertisement. For those of us who have grown up in Western Washington, Costco has been a necessity, a household staple, and a regional icon. I remember shopping trips before my dad would go out fishing, where the Costco receipt was taller than I was and we’d literally leave the store with 3 orange flats full of food and supplies.

This month Costco’s own label, Kirkland Signature, turns 15. To help celebrate, below are a few creative ways to use Kirkland Signature as the centerpiece for your next celebration:

Catering: While you can always utilize the catering and pre-made selection at Costco, for the bride on a budget or DIY-er, there is a variety of dishes to create from Costco. A personal favorite, Caesar salad with chicken and noodles (Yes, noodles. They are great fillers when feeding masses):

· I package Romaine
· 1 bottle Cardini’s Caesar dressing
· 2 roasted chickens
· 1 package penne pasta
· 1 package crutons

Wine: Ok, while Kirkland signature has not technically made it mark on wine yet there are a number of brands that are now what I’d call ‘Costco commoditized.’ These are decent wines, at reasonable prices---often rationed to serve masses (i.e: Yellow Tail).

Flowers: Always a great addition to your home, Costco’s oversized bouquets can be special ordered for celebrations. I’ve been to two weddings, bot done with combinations of rose and Stargazer lilies from Costco—beautiful. And—you can always request that the fillers are left out. Baby’s breath has a time and place.

Gifts: While it does not have the variety of The Bon (technically Macys, but I’ll never stop calling it The Bon. For those of you who remember Fredrick and Nelson’s, you’ll understand), Costco does offer a few great staple products that most newlyweds ask for (and need). Egyptian cotton sheets, pots and pan sets, knives, Dutch oven (rivaling Le Creuset). Another great Costco gift idea—a one-year membership!

Photos: These days’ most professional photographers will allow you the ‘rights’ to your prints (files). While there are some that should be purchased through the photographer (large prints, special edits, etc) Costco is a great alternative for the bulk of your print order. The online print site is easy to use, with print options in many sizes, formats and at the great Costco price. Most are even available via 1-hour photo.

Postal Press only went live on August 28^th and is already getting lots of buzz. Based in Portland, Postal Press is a joint venture from the amazingly talented Alyson Graves of Unruly Things.

It’s letterpress, with a smattering of vintage stamps, add in some old fashioned letters, and wrapped in pretty packaging. Yes please!

I’m a sucker for striped twine. There’s just something about it, that I love. When I have a workroom, I will have spools.

Letterpress is the better press?

When choosing paper products for an event, the design is nearly as important as the method of printing. There’s many options for printing - raised print, lith, digital, thermogrophy, laser, and then the grand-poobah…letterpress.

What’s cool about letterpress is that it was invented in the 15th century by Johannes Guttenberg, and even though there have been numerous technological advances, the bold impact of letterpress is still stunning. Somewhere between the 15th century and now, the archaic nature of the print and printing process has turned hip.

The end result with letterpress is an individualized product, that is visually and texturally appealing. While expensive, it’s often the perfect marriage of modern design and vintage printing.

There are certainly more out there, however, here are a sampling of some great letterpress vendors:

Even though they are in Minneapolis, Studio on Fire’s work is featured all over the U.S. All they do is letterpress. I regularly get lost on their blog. Bonus: if you’re unfamiliar with letterpress process, the descriptions and photos posted on their blog let you in on the secrets of letterpress.

Wedding Paper Divas

If you’re looking for cheap letterpress, look no further. Wedding Paper Divas is a stock invitation company so there is less customization and individuality. However, it’s one way to use the great style of Letterpress without breaking the bank. Wedding Paper Diva’s is owned by Tiny Prints – which is an easy way to get simple, fresh photo cards, announcements and invitations. Check them out.

Minted

Minted has come across my internet research on many occasions. It’s a great online retailer for a multitude of invitations. They are the exclusive retailer for 18 independent stationary brands. From Minted, you can choose paper options, eco-friendly, unique designs, plus you can browse from the convenience of your home. Currently, they only feature two letterpress products: wedding invites, and personal stationary. I’m a big fan of the Unite Wedding Invitations and blooming border personal stationary. Nothing says "I'm special" like personalized stationary.

Like blisters, snakes and Twitter I am just not a fan of Evites. The options just seem to be very bland, and electronic invites can seem impersonal. But, as we have all become more environment and cost conscious they have become a necessary evil when it comes to the many events in our lives. Really, they are just convenient.

I was so glad to find Paperless Post—which combines all the considerations of cost, environment, time and convenience. Through this online stationer you can design your personalized invite or announcement (and envelopes), monitor delivery, mange responses and keep an address book of your personal contacts. For those as indecisive as me—you can also save and adjust your work in their ‘draft’ section. There is a minimal service fee per invite (‘stamps’) but you are credited 25 upon sign-up and additional stamps for referring friends (+5).

Like traditional paper invitations or announcements, through Paperless Post you can choose your preferred paper type, color, size, motif, and font. There is also a ‘Wording Assistant,’ to suggest language appropriate for your specific event.

This is an ideal service for birth announcements—what new mom has time to address cards and lick stamps (?), and for Holiday parties—adding that extra special sparkle.

What a great way to keep the convenience of an electronic invite, and add the polish your event deserves.

Quarter Century

Today is the anniversary of the day of my birth and fortunately I have a plethora of events that span the next week. Dinner with the fam, wine and scrabble with the girls (plus Greg), fondue with grad school friends, and then THE JELLY flies in on Friday to continue the fun until Monday. We’re going to listen to some free music at the Celtic Swel l, tour Safeco, boat on Lake Washington, dinner at The Pink Door, drinks at The White Horse, then SUNDAY = FUNDAY. All I really wanted for my birthday was to float the river. It’s free, takes three hours, and is an excuse to make a new mix CD. (we float with a boombox duct taped to the top of a cooler, that has a leash – classy)

Other fun ideas I contemplated to celebrate my birthday were a dinner party, holi paint, and a scavenger hunt.

Delicate Jewelry

I’m a big proponent of delicate jewelry where less is more. Case and point – dogeared necklaces. I think I own five. Now, those who know me, might disagree, as I tend to cater every outfit to my giant oversized gold watch. I consider that a moot point.When dressing for an event, I tend to err on the side of minimal. Unless it’s a fantastic statement necklace. Those are a whole other story.

A great go-to place for unique and most often handmade jewelry is Etsy. When my co-worker needed a leather flower for a dog collar – I sent her to Etsy. When a friend needed a headband to wear for a Great Gatsby themed party – I sent her a link to an Etsy shop. You can find gingham printed napkins with moustaches, or handmade kids fleece hats. Whatever your fancy, Etsy has something for you.

It’s raining in Seattle. I know, I know…Shocker. Planning your event around the weather is a seemingly impossible task. You plan for sun, and it ends up a scorcher. Or you plan for a breezy evening, and get lightening. Mother nature is unpredictable. However, that’s a good thing when it comes to accessorizing with great umbrellas and parasols. I had a talent show routine in the fourth grade that involved umbrellas, so they’re a little bit awkward for me. But they can add a certain class and elegance for a drizzily event.

Rain or sunshine doesn’t have to ruin your event.

Holding Hands

Teal is one of my favorite colors, so it’s of no surprise these invites caught my eye. Not to mention they were featured on three of my daily blogs that I read.

Not only are the hands a actual custom silhouette of the couples hands, but the color scheme contrasted with the recycled envelopes are just perfect.

Engagement photos, family photos, well photo shoots in general, are made that much more lovely when you add personal touches. For Kelly + Mike, their personal touch was their dog Bruin and their boat. The natural lighting, and color contrast of the water certainly make for gorgeous pictures.

While the most common ‘add in’ is an animal, other options are favorite restaurants, vehicles, hats, parasols, anything really that adds color and personality.

If you’re concerned about accessories or locations being overbearing and too loud, my suggestion is: when in doubt, go with colorful shoes.

YAY Shoes!!

Oftentimes the only color for brides is their shoes and accessories. It’s a time where some justify that ridiculous pair of Manolo’s, Louboutins, or just give into a pair of shoes which is an extreme pop of color. Either way, choosing your wedding shoes can be a thrill. Carrie did it in Sex in the City. So can you.

Note to self: I should really stop justifying life decisions based on TV shows. It’s becoming a hassle, and expensive.

And on a note of practicality, I have found the most comfortable and widely available shoes that are appropriate for weddings (not surprisingly also popular with high school dances) are Nina Brand Shoes. Not the most fashion forward, but they are available in a wide variety of colors and styles.
